Build a small comparison sheet

Write the two candidate names across the top and your observed features down the side. Include the image region each observation concerns, such as the outer surface or a visible band. Under each candidate, record what the reference actually says and its source link or page. Leave a blank when the reference does not address a feature. A blank is more informative than filling the cell with a guess designed to make one candidate win.

Ask questions that can challenge the guess

Ask what visible feature supports the suggestion and what observation would make it less plausible. Request a distinction between information visible in the photo and background facts about the proposed material. If the explanation merely repeats the name in more elaborate language, it has not supplied new evidence. Compare descriptions, not just attractive reference photographs. A sample image with the same color is a lead to investigate, not a reason to copy its entire identification.

Choose an appropriate stopping point

Summarize what agrees, what conflicts and what remains unobserved. You might record two possible names and a note that the available images cannot separate them. If a dependable identification matters for a project, ask an appropriate geology specialist what examination would be useful rather than improvising tests from an AI answer. Keep that recommendation distinct from any app feature. Ending with a well-defined question is a successful research session when the alternative is false certainty.
