Make two columns
Label one column observations and the other interpretations. Write gray surface with pale bands in the first, and a possible name in the second. Add the date and the image you used. Avoid turning a visual description into an unmeasured property: shiny is an observation, while a precise hardness value needs a different basis. If a guide lists a property, identify it as information about the proposed material, not something your photograph measured.
Be clear about what you are naming
The USGS distinguishes minerals with characteristic structure and composition from rocks containing mineral material. Use that distinction to ask whether your suggested name refers to the whole specimen or a visible component. For example, a name attached to a light patch need not describe the darker material around it. Mark the exact region in a duplicate photograph and keep the untouched original. A focused question is more useful than asking an assistant to explain every part at once.
Leave room for an unresolved answer
Write a short confidence note in words, such as tentative because only one face is visible. Do not invent a numerical accuracy score. Add the next question that could clarify the record: does another existing photograph show the same banding, or is the label from the original collection available? If no further evidence exists, keep unknown as a valid entry. A notebook that preserves uncertainty is easier to improve than a catalog full of precise but unsupported names.
